Blessed; a study in Matthew 5

Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.Matthew 5:3

I have yet to meet anyone who desired to be poor. It is not something that most people strive their whole lives to become! When Jesus says that we are blessed to be poor in spirit, people scratch their heads. What did he really mean? Why should we be poor?

Be honest. It's time to change.

To be poor in spirit is to realize that no matter what you do or can achieve for yourself, it is not good enough and you still need Jesus. The Living Bible says, “Humble men are very fortunate!”

It is difficult to change when you believe there is nothing wrong with who you are. Humbling yourself (or being humbled), you realize the significance of what Jesus did for you on the cross and can fully receive that gift and allow Him to change your heart. Jesus was concerned about the heart of a man above anything else.

For the LORD sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the LORD looks on the heart.1 Samuel 16:7

There were enough men that were rich in spirit and thought that by their works they were better than others and so closer to God. This attitude removed them from the kingdom work God had called them to; to share His love with others.

Jesus knew that if he reached the heart of a man, he would truly repent and enter into the kingdom, ready to do the work that was before him.

It is interesting to point out that the word translated as “kingdom” was not referring to a location but the right to rule, or authority to rule. This verse could be read as,

“Blessed are the humble who turn their hearts fully to God, for theirs is the authority of heaven.”
