Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.Matthew 5:7

Usually when I hear this scripture shared, the context of mercy is described as "forgiveness." That if you forgive others you will be forgiven. This is true and supported many times over in scripture, but our day to day use of the word mercy, I feel, limits our understanding of what Jesus was saying.

Blessed, a study of Matthew 5

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.Matthew 5:6

Out of the blessings Jesus speaks of in Matthew 5, this is my favorite. It should encourage all who read it, no matter where they are in their walk with Christ.

Even without breaking down the meaning of this verse, it is easy to follow and understand what Jesus was saying. However, the two prominent words are “hunger” and “thirst.” Understanding these two words shows the depth of this passage and bring it into sharp focus.

Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.Matthew 5:5

If we were to expect anyone to inherit the earth, we would probably assume it was a forceful person, advancing their own desires and taking what they wanted. Jesus throws another curve ball and says that it is quite the opposite.

Blessed are those that mourn, for they shall be comforted.Matthew 5:4

When many people read this passage, they are unsure as to what they should walk away with. In our culture, most pain is to be avoided. And if you are experiencing pain or discomfort, people do not generally consider you fortunate.

Godly grief is a blessing

Paul writes a letter to the Corinthian church where he conveys the same point Jesus was trying to make here in Matthew.

Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.Matthew 5:3

I have yet to meet anyone who desired to be poor. It is not something that most people strive their whole lives to become! When Jesus says that we are blessed to be poor in spirit, people scratch their heads. What did he really mean? Why should we be poor?
